Why Turkey Built the World’s Longest Suspension Bridge (Video)

Turkey has a new construction record: their brand-new 1915 Çanakkale Bridge is now the longest suspension bridge in the world, reaching 4.6 kilometers, or almost 2.86 miles in length. Why did they choose this particular type of construction, instead of numerous possible alternatives?

Suspension bridges are difficult to build. Their spans between supporting tower structures can be very long and therefore any sources of vibrations, including those coming from winds, must be carefully considered and modeled in advance. The span of 1915 Çanakkale Bridge at its longest segment is an incredible 2,023 meters.

Despite the overall complexity or the design, the span length was also the most important parameter which outclassed other candidate types. Watch the following video for the story about this magnificent achievement:
