Nissan is going to start selling electricity to its employees, but why?

Nissan is one of the biggest car manufacturers in Japan and a very well-known company around the world. Not that long ago the Nissan Leaf was the world’s best selling electric car. Those days are now gone, but Nissan’s commitment to green technologies remains. In fact, now Nissan is going to start selling electricity to its employees. What?

Nissan usually makes it to the top 10 car manufacturers by revenue list. It is actually a huge company, looking for ways to innovate and advance in accordance with the new trends and demands of the automotive market. Nissan Qashqai was actually one of the cars that kick started this whole crossover trend. And its smaller yet controversial brother Juke was one of the cars that made city cars grow fatter. You can’t forget Nissan’s contributions to electric mobility either. Nissan Leaf was a hugely impressive vehicle when other manufacturers were not looking at electric cars too seriously. Now we have a lot of electric cars and the Leaf is somewhere in the background, but Nissan is still pushing forward.

As the year 2021 was nearing its end, Nissan announced that it is going to start selling its renewable electricity to its employees in Japan. The program will first be open to employees living in the Kanto region. And it is not some crazy idea – Nissan is just trying to push forward with its carbon-neutrality efforts. Nissan would like to be entirely neutral in terms of carbon pollution and that, apparently, includes its employees. Furthermore, this will become an opportunity to see how well electric cars can be charged at home using 100 % renewable electricity.

Nissan started selling electricity through selected dealerships in 2019 in order to promote home-charging by EV users. This is because Nissan aims to become carbon neutral throughout the life cycle of its products by 2050. This means that manufacturing, use and recycling of electric cars will have to be done in an environmentally friendly way. Nissan will try to identify the ideal business partner to offer attractive power pricing plans to owners of Nissan EVs such as the Nissan LEAF and Nissan Ariya.

Nissan has huge plants for the future. Nissan Ambition 2030 plan promises huge investments to electrification. This should result in many new electric car models as well as other technologies. It is interesting that electric car manufacturing is also making Nissan sell renewable electricity to its employees. We will see if other car manufacturers are planning something similar.
