Could we actually grow potatoes on Mars? (Video)

Mars was very similar to Earth in a very distant past. That is why scientists are eyeing possibilities to make it habitable – firstly starting with a permanent Martian base. However, getting there is difficult. You cannot resupply a local settlement the same way we do with an International Space Station. That is why we need to make this base nearly fully self-sustaining long before we fly there.

Having a self-sustainable settlement also means that we will need to learn to grow vegetables and crops in Martian soil. For this purpose we will need a source of fertilizers, a source of heat and water, plus lots of research which is needed to find out if it is really possible to grow, for example, potatoes – in Martian soil. And even then there will be quite a bit of uncertainty left, because nobody actually has tried growing vegetables on Mars.
