Broken Shaker Review – Why The Broken Shaker is Miami’s Best Bar

Welcome to Being There, our column on the most essential, slightly under-the-radar travel destinations in the world.

You came to Miami for the beach. The sun. The sand. The chorus of lapping waves from the nearby Atlantic. You won’t get any of those at Broken Shaker, the understated backyard watering hole at the Freehand, a sceney hotel just spitting distance from South Beach. But R&R awaits you, all the same. From the reinvented Pimm’s Cup to the rotating cast of tacos, nothing tries too hard, including you, who are welcome to stay as long as you’d like.

Ten years after opening as the locals-only hang in a tourist-slammed district, Broken Shaker remains the best bar in town. This is no secret locale at this point—the Shaker has earned two James Beard Award nominations and now has outposts in New York, L. A., and Chicago—but the crowd has managed to stay, well, cool (and the drinks very, very good). The oontz-oontz blaring from nearly everywhere else in the neighborhood demands that every evening be an over-the-top production, but nights here still simmer like an on-a-whim, just-because, why-the-hell-not house party. The guests may not be from down the block anymore, but they all most certainly come back.
